Violator: Annihilation process
11/01/11 || revenant
So I have to confess I’ve had a fair bit of trouble piecing together this review. Call it writers block, call it shit out of ideas or whatever, I just can’t seem to find the words to put down. I mean, how can I when Violator’s 2010 EP release “Annihilation Process” is almost exactly the same as their 2006 debut release “Chemical Assault”? Their songs and sound have not progressed a single inch in the four years since their debut.
Now you probably already know there are a few of us here that are quite big fans of Violator’s work, as evidenced in them ranking number 38 in out best albums for the decade 2000-2009. I am one of those fans, so to hear Violator’s second piece of energetic, punk infused thrash ripping out of my speakers you would think I would be one happy fucken chappy, wouldn’t you? Well it’s true, to a degree.
Oh yes, I do love the screaming vocals, precise and quick guitar work, rapid fire drumming and well placed gang vocals, all of these stroke my fur in the right direction. The sound grabs from “Fight Club” and anti-society lyrics are also fan-fucken-tastic in terms of bringing the package together. Overall, this is a damn fine piece of metal from one of the best of the new crop of thrash artists. So why am I a little disappointed?
Twenty two minutes. That’s the exact amount of original music you will find on this EP. Don’t get be wrong, I love every second of it, it’s just that after a wait of four years for the follow up to come through, twenty two minutes just doesn’t seem adequate. (And on a side note, the cover song that brings this EP up to twenty five minutes is also ace, one of the better covers I’ve heard). Indeed, as great as this record is, I get to the end and can’t help thinking “is that all there is?”
Violator have delivered an excellent follow up to their debut release, and any fan of the first record should hunt this one out. They are definitely one of the better thrash acts that have arisen since thrash’s revival. Let’s just hope in future they can increase their output a little more than their current rate. When it comes to great music, I’m always hungry for it. And in the case of Violator, I want more.
